Patrick Hong is a National Science Foundation-funded startup CEO and University of California, Irvine, communications professor passionate about ethically leveraging artificial intelligence for student success via a growth mindset, grit, and agency to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in education. He is an engineering-trained and entrepreneurial-minded problem-solver with over 30+ years of experience in the media, 10+ years in company building, and 10+ years as a university professor. A firm believer in entrepreneurial spirit and lifelong learning that stimulates critical thinking and innovation.
In addition to leading Prenostik in building an AI-powered My Learning Coach to improve student graduation retention and graduation rates, he is also a Samueli School of Engineering Communications Professor at the University of California, Irvine.
Prior to his entrepreneurial ambitions, Patrick was formally the Executive Editor for America’s longest-running auto enthusiast magazine, Road & Track. In that role, he helped the magazine transform from a traditional print publication to a multi-channel media brand. As a writer, he has driven over 1500+ cars and enjoyed creating stories about unique adventures such as flying in an F-18 Super Hornet jet fighter and NASA’s vomit comet, driving a Ferrari through China and India, piloting a Mercedes through Russia, and racing a Maserati in Germany’s Nürburgring Ring 24-Hour race.
Patrick holds a patent for a method of quantitative analysis. He has been an AI Ed Tech speaker and a UC Irvine Faculty Fellow for Digital Learning Excellence. He is also a UC Irvine and UCLA Alumni Association scholarship reviewer. In 2007, he was elected a UC Irvine Distinguished Alumni and inducted into the inaugural 2015 UC Irvine Samueli School of Engineering Hall of Fame.
Patrick earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Irvine, his M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California, and dual MBA degrees from the UCLA Anderson School of Business and the National University of Singapore Business School.
