Nia Quintet

The music from this group is a collaboration of five individuals searching for similar things in music, in hopes of obtaining a sense of unity and understanding. The collective unity of the band allows us to express our ideas clearly through composition. Having like-minded individuals reaching progressively towards the same goal but from different angles brings a refreshing new quality to the ensemble. Led by trumpeter/composer Scott Anderson, the Nia Quintet blends together musicians of the highest caliber to present a showcase of melodic interaction and improvisation. The first of their two albums End of Time, released on Blujazz Records, received rave reviews from national publications such as JazzTimes, Improv and Cadence magazine. The second album Earth Sign also received rave reviews and was the catalyst for their newest endeavor, moving the groups’ direction into different territories and adding the newest members of the group Paul Mutzabaugh and Jon Deitemyer.

As with many songwriters, I find that I express myself best when I’m writing music. Inspired by the new sound that Jon and Paul brought to Nia, I wrote a bunch of new songs and we were ready to record. As artists, we document our growth in our recordings, and we went into the studio in the fall of 2014 with the goal of creating an album with a more produced feel, much like a pop recording rather than a typical jazz album. Paul, Brian and I spent time in the mixing studio for over two years, experimenting and creating sounds that added texture to the recorded tracks. Music by Scott Anderson is Nia Quintet’s third recording, and the first since Jon Dietemyer and Paul Mutzabaugh joined the band.
